The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) administers and enforces federal laws and establishes policies that make sure all Americans have equal access to the housing of their choice. Fair Housing Act
Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents of legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and handicap (disability). Equal Credit Opportunity Act
The Federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibits creditors from discriminating against credit applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, age (provided the applicant has the capacity to enter into a binding contract); because all or part of the applicant’s income derives from a public assistance program; or because the applicant has in good faith exercised any right under the Consumer Credit Protection Act. State and Local Fair Housing/Fair Lending Laws
In addition to the federal anti-discrimination statutes, many state and local governments have enacted regulations prohibiting discrimination in the sale, lease, rental or financing of housing on the basis of the neighborhood in which the property is located, sexual orientation, mental or physical illness, political affiliation, lawful source of income, environmental conditions or other characteristics. Reasonable accommodations in rules, practices and procedures for persons with disabilities;
Non-discriminatory terms and conditions for the sale, rental, financing, or insuring of a dwelling; and
To be free from harassment or intimidation for exercising your fair housing rights.
